Controversy over MTBE

An additive developed to help pollution has been revealed as a problem to our water system.

MTBE was added to fuel to create more oxygen in the burning process to help fight air pollution. The additive has recently become a major news story with the discovery of the chemical’s potential to harm rather than help.

Several fuel tanks that hold gasoline for gas stations have started leaking with the MTBE getting into the ground water supply. The major oil companies don’t know what to do about this problem and have no immediate resolution. The companies don’t know how to get rid of the chemical and they don’t yet know what harmful health effects this may cause.

 Senator Smith (R-NH), chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, plans to consider shortly Sen. Inhofe’s (R-OK) bill (S. 1886) to allow state governors to waive the oxygen content requirement for reformulated gasoline, which would enable states to reduce or eliminate MTBE in gasoline (MTBE is methyl tertiary butyl ether, which is added to gasoline to make it burn cleaner but has been found to contaminate ground water.) This bill, however, does not ensure that future gasoline will retain the air-quality benefits of current reformulated gasoline, as any bill designed to eliminate MTBE must do.
